Important: Important Patient Notice: Meningitis B (MenB) Cases in Kent
We are aware of recent reports of an increase in cases of Meningococcal Group B (MenB) in Kent. While this outbreak is not local to Liverpool, we understand that patients—particularly students and young people—may be concerned.
What you need to know:
-
MenB is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia.
-
The MenB strain is different from the strains covered by the routine MenACWY vaccine.
Vaccination information:
-
Our practice offers the MenACWY vaccine for eligible patients, including students. This protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W, and Y.
-
However, MenACWY does NOT protect against MenB.
-
The MenB vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for most adults, but it can be accessed privately at a cost.
What should you do?
-
Ensure your vaccinations are up to date, especially if you are a student or planning to attend university.
-
Be aware of the symptoms of meningitis (such as fever, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, and rash) and seek urgent medical attention if concerned.
If you would like to arrange a MenACWY vaccination, please contact the practice.
Thank you for your understanding.
