About St James Health Centre

St James Health Centre with its century old history is the oldest Surgery in Liverpool City Centre. Our NHS GP Practice aims to provide the highest quality of medical care possible to the Liverpool community. Our NHS health care services are provided by four GPs, Dr Francisco Lopez, Dr Jennifer Smith, Dr Robina Ghosh and Dr Nigel Chatwin. Our Senior Nurse Practitioner is Trish Jones.

Out of Hours: Our practice provides an 'out of hours' service between 6.30pm – 8:00am during week days, weekends and bank holidays. This service if operated by 'Urgent Care 24' who can be contacted by calling 0151 220 3685

Non-Emergency Advice: If you are feeling unwell and need a telephone health assessment, please call the NHS 111 service free of charge from any phone by dialling “111”. Alternatively you can still check your symptoms on or use eConsult to send a message to our doctors.

    Dr Nigel Chatwin

    FRCGP, MD, DTM&H, FMH(CH), Dipl Med(CH)

    Dr Robina Ghosh

    Dr Ghosh qualified from The University of Liverpool in 2000 and she completed her GP training at Aintree hospital. She has also worked as a community clinical teacher at The University of Liverpool for 7 years before leaving and taking up partnership at St James Health Centre. She has a keen interest in undergraduate medical training as well as women’s and child health. She is the cancer care lead for St James and is keen to develop the practice to meet the growing needs of the community.

    Dr Francisco Lopez

    Dr Lopez is originally from Spain and qualified as a GP there in 1994 and became a member of the Royal College of GPs in 2013. He has worked as a freelance and a salaried GP across Blackpool, Preston, Manchester and Merseyside since moving to UK in 2002. Dr Lopez is a qualified FY2 supervisor and has special interest in cardiovascular medicine and IT.

    Outside of medicine Francisco loves cooking for his daughter and is a incompetent chess player.

    Broad background in most specialities, particularly orthopaedics and general surgery. She is able to treat and prescribe medicine for minor illness and chronic conditions.

    Offering Spirometry testing, Hypertension reviews, Immunisations, Helicobacter testing, Health Checks and Venepuncture.


Practice Team

Our Reception Team handle all of the tasks involved in keeping the practice running smoothly - such as the scanning and coding of the huge volumes of paperwork coming into the practice, booking appointments, dealing with prescriptions and much more.

They are all multi-skilled and flexible in their roles, allowing seamless coverage of tasks depending on the needs of the practice.

The new Care Navigator aspect to their role refers to the ability of our experienced & knowledgeable staff to direct patients to the appropriate services for their needs - be that within the practice itself, or other NHS, council-run or voluntary organisations.

    The Practice Manager is involved in managing all business aspects of the practice, such as making sure the right systems are in place to provide a high quality of patient care, humans resources, finance, patient safety, premises, equipment and information governance. The Practice Manager supports the GP Partners, GPs and other medical professionals with delivering patient services.

All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.
The average pay for GPs working in St James Health Centre in 2019/20 was £69,550 before tax and National Insurance. This is for 1 full time GP and 3 part time GPs.
